You’ve grown beautiful lavender—now it’s time to enjoy the fruits (or flowers) of your labor. Harvesting, drying, and using lavender makes all your hard work worthwhile. From knowing exactly when to cut the stems to exploring creative ways to enjoy them, here’s what you need to know.

Harvesting, Drying, and Using Lavender

If you haven’t started growing your own lavender yet, I highly recommend taking a look at my posts on How to Grow Lavender and How to Choose the Best Lavender Variety. These guides will set you up for success—especially if you’re gardening in hot summer climates.

When & How to Harvest Lavender

Harvesting, Drying, and Using Lavender
  • Harvest when the first few flowers on the buds on a stem have opened. This sweet spot captures peak fragrance and oil content.
  • Snip your lavender after the dew evaporates but before the midday sun intensifies.
  • Use clean scissors or pruners, cutting just above the leafy part of the stem. (Avoid the woody, brown section.)

Drying & Storing Lavender

  • Tie small handfuls of stems with twine or rubber bands and hang them upside down in a dry, shady area.
  • Too much light can bleach the blooms and reduce their natural oils.
  • In arid climates, lavender may dry in as little as a week. The stems should snap easily when fully dried.
  • Once it’s dry, store buds in airtight containers away from bright light to preserve color and scent for up to a year.

Favorite Ways to Use Lavender

Culinary Uses:

  • Herbes de Provence: Blend dried lavender with rosemary, thyme, oregano, and marjoram for a classic French seasoning.
  • Lavender Sugar or Syrup: Infuse sugar or simple syrup for lemonade, cocktails, baked goods, or ice cream.
  • Sweet vs. Savory: Royal Velvet and other English types are ideal for desserts; lavandins like ‘Provence’ are great in savory dishes.

If you love adding a floral touch to recipes, be sure to check out my post on growing and using edible flowers – it’s full of ideas for adding blossoms to your dishes.

There’s a unique joy in giving handmade and homegrown gifts. People love knowing where their food and products come from, and there’s nothing more special than sharing the organic bounty of your garden. I’m excited to share some thoughtful DIY gift ideas from the garden that will delight your loved ones. Let’s get started!

Gifts from the Garden

Gift Index:

Loofah Soap

Loofah Soap

I first made this at a class at Arizona Worm Farm. After seeing how simple it was, my daughter-in-law and I made our own with lavender and loofah from the garden.

Supplies Needed:

Instructions: Place the cut-up loofah (the middle of the scrubbers) in the mold and then add the melted soap base. Add dried lavender and a drop of lavender oil. Let it harden and cure for a couple of weeks before using.

For tips on how to grow lavender in warm climates, check out this guide.

Peach Jam and Roselle Jam

There’s nothing quite like homemade jam made from fresh, homegrown fruits. Peach jam and roselle jam are delicious treats that make perfect gifts.

You can find the recipe for roselle jam here. Use your favorite peach jam recipe and follow instructions for properly canning. I also love canning salsa from the garden to give as gifts. Here’s my favorite salsa recipe.

Saved Seeds from the Garden

Sharing seeds is a beautiful way to spread the joy of gardening. Bundle them with a ribbon, and you have a thoughtful and inspiring gift. Learn more about how to save seeds in this guide.

Instructions: Add 1-2 teaspoons of seeds to a paper envelope (these are the ones I use) and tie a few packages together with a ribbon (this is my favorite ribbon). Add a QR code link to the “How to Grow” guides for each crop on my website to make growing easy!

Bay Laurel Wreath

This bay laurel wreath is simple to make and adds a lovely, natural touch to any home. If you are growing bay laurel, this is an easy gift. If you’re not growing it, learn how to grow bay laurel in this guide.

Supplies Needed:

  • Instructions: Add the branches to the wreath by slipping the stem side of the branch into the wreath. Use the branches’ natural curves to guide where to place them on the wreath. Then, attach one end of the wire to the wreath and wrap it around the wreath under the leaves to hold the branches in place when they dry. It just took a couple of minutes! You can leave it as is or add more decorations.

I also make bay laurel wreaths on a wire. You can learn more about how to make that type of bay laurel wreath in this guide.

How to Make a Beautiful and Fragrant Bay Leaf Wreath

Loofah Dish Scrubber

Making loofah scrubbers is easy and fun!

Supplies Needed:

  • Instructions: Let loofahs fully develop on the vine. Cut off the end and shake out the seeds when they are dry. Peel off the outer skin. Then cut it open down one of the ridges. Loofahs have a core in the middle where the seeds are; cut out the core where it attaches to the outer sponge. Save that middle part to add to loofah soap (see above), then flatten it out. Soak the sponges in water and vinegar. Then, cut into even parts and sew together around the outside edge. (Your sewing doesn’t need to be perfect, mine wasn’t!) Tie off both ends well to hold it together.

Check out my detailed guide on how to make Loofah Scrubbers for further step-by-step instructions.

Fruit Basket

If you have citrus in your yard, you often take it for granted. Give fresh citrus to friends and neighbors. Check the local Goodwill or thrift stores for baskets.

Fill a basket with lemons, limes, or calamondins. The same goes for pomegranates—they can be expensive, so share a few with those who will enjoy them. Attach your favorite recipe for lemon curd, key lime pie, or pomegranate jalepeño cream cheese dip.

Herb Bundles – (Bouquet Garni)

These herb bundles, or ‘bouquet garni,’ translated from French as a “garnished bouquet,” are easy to make. Place them directly into soups or stews while cooking. The herbs release their flavors into your cooking, and when you’re ready to serve, you can effortlessly remove the bundle from the pot without the hassle of fishing out individual herbs. Give one with a favorite recipe as a gift, and include more ingredients to make it extra special.

Supplies Needed:

Instructions: Gather fresh herbs like rosemary, thyme, and bay leaves. Place the desired amount in each bag. Use within a month or so for the best flavor.

Herb Bundles

Wildflower Seed Packets

Sharing wildflower seeds is a gift that keeps on giving. I gave these to many of my neighbors last year, and it was fun to see the wildflowers sprouting around the neighborhood. Get complete instructions and download the free printable for wildflower gifts here.

Holiday Neighbor Gift: Wildflower Seed Packets

Supplies Needed: I used cosmosCalifornia poppyShirley poppylarkspur, and cornflower (bachelor button) seeds in my mix.

Instructions: Add ½ to 1 cup of sand or vermiculite as filler. Add one teaspoon of each type of seed into the filler. If you purchased a seed mixture, include 4–5 teaspoons in each bag.

Herbal Teas

Herbal Tea Blends

Mix your favorite combinations and put them in these jars (love the attached spoon!). Then, give them some reusable tea bags or a steeping mug to enjoy their homegrown organic tea.

Roselle Citrus Tea

A refreshing blend of roselle, lemon verbena leaves, stevia, lemongrass, and lemon peel. More information about roselle citrus tea.

Chamomile Tea

Remember all that chamomile we harvested? It’s time to share it! Learn more in this chamomile growing guide.

Calming Tea Blend

A soothing mix of lemon balm, lemon verbena, tulsi, chamomile, calendula, stevia leaf, and citrus wheels.

Freeze-drying or dehydrating herbs preserves the garden’s fresh flavor. Add some to jars and share organically grown herbs as a gift. Learn more about how to freeze dry herbs in this guide.

Freeze Dried Herbs

Celery Salt

This simple yet flavorful seasoning captures the fresh essence of celery, allowing you to enhance your favorite dishes anytime. Share this fresh flavor with others. Learn how to make celery salt in this guide.

Gifts from the Garden Assembly Ideas

I like to add personal touches like handwritten notes or labels. Combine different items into a cohesive gift set by creating gift baskets. Use burlap or jute from the garden to wrap your gifts. Use what you have.

Now you know some of the gifts from the garden I’m giving this year. What gifts are you giving from your garden this year? I’d love to hear your ideas!

Holiday Neighbor Gift: Wildflower Seed Packets

The holidays are often the perfect time to plant wildflower seeds. Give your friends and neighbors the gift of wildflower seeds to make it easy for them to add wildflowers to their yards and gardens. This gift will bring a smile to their faces and make your community a beautiful place.

Create a fun and beautiful holiday neighbor gift with wildflower seeds

A few years ago, I gave a friend (and neighbor) a wildflower seed packet as a thank you. She planted the seeds. Now, each spring, her yard is covered with beautiful wildflower blooms. This year, I decided to share wildflower seeds with more neighbors as a holiday gift. I hope to see more yards in our neighborhood filled with blooms and pollinators next spring!

Holiday Neighbor Gift: Wildflower Seed Packs
My neighbor’s beautiful wildflowers

1. Choose the right wildflower seeds

Learn which wildflowers grow well in your area and buy seeds in bulk. Regional seed mixes are available from flower suppliers like American Meadows. Learn which seeds are native and grow best in your region. Select 4-5 of these seeds to add to your mix.

I used cosmos, California poppy, Shirley poppy, larkspur, and cornflower (bachelor button) seeds in my mix.

Looking for a native wildflower to include in your seed packets? Arroyo Lupine is a beautiful, pollinator-friendly option that reseeds easily.

If you’re looking for more specifics about how to grow wildflowers, read my previous blog post about how to grow wildflowers.

If you grow wildflowers, save seeds to add to your wildflower seed packets!

2. Create the wildflower seed packets

Now, onto the fun part! The next step is filling the seed bags. I used these craft tin tie bags from Amazon. Add ½ to 1 cup sand or vermiculite as filler. Add one teaspoon of each type of seed into the filler. If you purchased a seed mixture, include 4-5 teaspoons in each bag.

Holiday Neighbor Gift: Wildflower Seed Packs

3. Download and print the labels for the wildflower seed packets

Wildflower Seed Labels

Once you’ve created the seed packets, including instructions on how to plant and grow the wildflowers is essential. I created a free download to print out and attach to the packets or gift bags.

Download the wildflower seed packet labels and instructions here:

Here’s a link to the blank labels I used on Amazon

4. Deliver your gifts with a smile!

One of my favorite parts of the holiday season is delivering gifts to my neighbors. When my kids were young, we wore Santa hats and sang (or tried to sing) carols when they opened the door. It’s nice to connect face-to-face and say hello!

Creating a fun and beautiful holiday neighbor gift with wildflower seeds is a fantastic way to bring a smile to your neighbors’ faces. Selecting the right seeds and including instructions can spread color and beauty throughout your neighborhood. So, get creative, have fun, and bring a little joy (and some flowers) to your community this holiday season!

From handy tools to favorite things to wear, here are my current garden gift ideas that will make any gardener happy.

Looking for gift ideas for gardeners? I’ve got you covered! This list of items is perfect for any gardener, whether just starting or a seasoned pro. From handy tools to favorite things to wear, here are my current garden favorites. I hope you like these gift ideas that will make any gardener happy.

Something to read

I picked up this book at a garden shop recently in England. It’s filled with beautiful quotes and thoughts about many of the reasons we love to garden so much. I’ve loved reading it.

Something to wear

Gift Ideas That Will Make Any Gardener Happy (5)

I love wearing overalls in the garden, but they can be too heavy and get hot. That’s why I’m a big fan of these cooling overalls from Dickies. They have lots of pockets, are comfortable to wear, and even have roll-up legs with snaps. I highly recommend them!

Something for roselle tea

Gift Ideas That Will Make Any Gardener Happy

Mornings in the garden with a mug of roselle citrus tea is the best way to begin the day. This mug is just the right size – the logo isn’t bad, either. Get my recipe for roselle tea here.

Something to do

Gift Ideas That Will Make Any Gardener Happy

My gift to myself this year is time to be creative. Before I was a gardener, I was an artist, and this lettering book is the perfect way to doodle and remind myself how fun it is to be creative.

Something to help you plant

Low desert friends, I finally created the guide to help plan and plant my garden. This planting guide features information on how and when to start seeds indoors and when to transplant them outside for nearly 100 different fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Something to use

Gift Ideas That Will Make Any Gardener Happy

This dibber from Growoya is a favorite, for sure. It’s the perfect size for planting anything from seeds to ranunculus corms. Knowing that it’s hand-lathed in Canada from natural yellow cedar with no chemical finish makes it even better!

Something to wear

Gift Ideas That Will Make Any Gardener Happy

I’ve been wearing Merry People boots since 2020. They are comfortable, keep my feet dry, and bonus… they are cute too! I have them in yellow and black, and I have my eye on some green ones that I hope Santa puts under the tree.

A Gardening Journal

Gifts That Will Make Any Gardener Happy

My favorite part of this journal is the illustrations; they are beautiful. I also love the grid pages for planning out my garden. Full of gardening advice and wisdom. This journal includes an easy-to-use garden log for each week of the year.

Kitchen Gifts for Gardeners

This is my fourth year doing a gift guide, and I have to say this guide is my favorite so far. These kitchen gifts for gardeners make life easier, the food tastier, and harvests last longer. I hope you like them as much as I do.

The goal with most of the vegetables, herbs, and fruit I grow in my garden is to harvest them and bring them into my kitchen. Through the years, I’ve appreciated quality products that last a long time and helped me use and process my garden harvests.

If you want even more garden gift information, head to my previous gift guides. I share other garden favorites there.

Kitchen gifts for gardeners: Harvest Baskets

I love these harvest baskets so much that after buying the square-shaped one, I bought the rectangle size too. They are perfect for gathering garden harvests and look good sitting in the kitchen. During tomato season, they are usually filled with ripening and ripe tomatoes on my kitchen counter.

Kitchen gifts for gardeners: Herb Scissors

Herb Scissors

Chopping up fresh herbs is so simple with these scissors – no cutting board required. The 5 blades slice the herbs easily and quickly. They are easy to clean and durable too. I bought my herb scissors in 2016 and they look (and work) as well as the day I bought them.

Kitchen gifts for gardeners: Breville Citrus Press

Citrus season around here is no joke. We process large amounts of lemons, oranges, and grapefruits every year. I bought this citrus press in 2012 during citrus season here in Arizona, and I’ve used it every year sinceThe durable die-cast juicing cone and stainless steel parts are well-made. It is quick, and thorough, and squeezes every drop.

Kitchen gifts for gardeners: Iced Tea Maker

Iced Tea Maker

I love making large batches of roselle tea all summer long in this pitcher. Put dried roselle in the center infuser and then fill the pitcher with water — about 12 hours later the tea is ready to go. It is easy to clean and durable.

Kitchen gifts for gardeners: Keurig K-Supreme Plus Coffee Maker

Keruig Tea Maker

My kids love this coffee maker for making hot chocolate, but I love using the included “My K-Cup” for making single servings of hot / iced roselle tea and other herbal teas all year long.

Kitchen gifts for gardeners: Produce Saver

An abundance of fresh produce lasts so much longer when I store it in these containers in the fridge. It’s like magic! They stack easily for storage, but they are usually in my fridge keeping garden harvests fresh.

Kitchen gifts for gardeners: Excalibur Dehydrator

kitchen gifts for gardeners

I recently upgraded to an Excalibur dehydrator. This was a much-needed upgrade. There are plenty of trays, making it easy to process large harvests. Some of my favorite things to dehydrate are gingerpeppersapplesonionstomatoesgreens & herbs.

Kitchen gifts for gardeners: Vitamix BlenderKitchen gifts for gardeners

After many years of buying and replacing broken blenders, I invested in this Vitamix in 2015. It’s been used almost daily since that time for morning smoothies, grinding dehydrated herbs, chopping veggies, and much more.

Kitchen gifts for gardeners: Compost Bin

Kitchen gifts for gardeners

This kitchen compost bin earned a spot on my counter in 2015. It looks good and doesn’t smell or attract bugs (the carbon filter helps with that). This makes adding kitchen scraps to my vermicomposting or compost bins easy.

Kitchen gifts for gardeners: Cast Iron PanKitchen gifts for gardeners

Cast iron skillets are classic and last nearly forever. Don’t underestimate the size of this pan. It’s huge! (Make sure it will fit in your oven). But its size is the thing I love most about it. I always use this pan when making large meals for my hungry boys (and their friends). I’ve had my pan since 2012.

Gardening doesn’t have to be complicated. I’ve come to rely on several basics in my garden. These are my garden favorites. My choices for this year’s gardener’s gift guide are the things I can’t do without in my garden.

Gardener’s Gift Guide: a reliable planting guide

Gardener's Gift Guide: Garden Favorites

Planting at the right time is one of the most important parts of gardening. My perpetual planting calendar, created for the low desert of Arizona, shows exactly what to plant each month.

This perpetual calendar also has pictures from my garden of what can be harvested each month. It is a practical gift that is also well-made and will last for years.

Garden gift guide: Garden pruners

Gardener's Gift Guide: Garden Favorites

When I head out to my garden each morning, I take one tool with me — and this is it. These Felco garden shears are a garden favorite for sure. This tool handles all the day to day jobs in my garden. I feel out of sorts if I’m in my garden and don’t have this tucked into my back pocket.

Gardener’s Gift Guide: a practical gardening book

Gardener's Gift Guide: Garden Favorites

I like to keep things simple and easy to understand. That’s exactly what I tried to do when writing this book. How to Grow Your Own Food – An Illustrated Beginner’s Guide to Container Gardening identifies 50 common, easy-to-grow edible plants, from herbs to vegetables, along with detailed care instructions.

Gardener’s Gift Guide: Ollas

The best way to water outdoor potted plants #containergardening #watering #containergarden

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you know I love ollas for watering containers. Give your gardener the gift of time with an olla from Growoya. The vessel is buried underground and you keep it filled with water, which saves water and time to grow better plants.

Gardener’s Gift Guide: Joey harvest apron

Gardener's Gift Guide: Garden Favorites

Harvests happen year-round in my garden. This harvesting apron holds harvests big and small without being bulky or hot during the warmest months of the year. I love filling it up and dumping it into a favorite harvest basket.

Gardener’s Gift Guide: soil testing kit

Gardener's Gift Guide: Garden Favorites

Testing your soil used to be expensive, time-consuming, and complicated. Not anymore. This soil testing kit is a game changer. I love it when innovation and good ideas make my life easier. Testing my soil at least once a year has made a considerable difference in the health of my garden. Soil testing gives you the knowledge you can’t come by any other way. It takes the guesswork out of when to add fertilizer to your garden.

Gardener’s Gift Guide: watering grids

The best way to water square foot gardens and raised bed gardens #squarefootgarden #gardening #watering #driplineirrigation

I remember first seeing the garden grids from Garden in Minutes on Instagram. I was struck by what a good idea it was. Garden grids solve the problem of even watering and dividing your beds for square-foot gardening. All these years later, I’m still adding them to every new raised bed I install and recommending them to all my friends and clients. I love these watering grids.

Gardener’s Gift Guide: wooden dibber

From planting onions and garlic to planting seeds, I use my wooden dibber. A must-have at planting time.

Gifts for Gardeners: raised bed mix from Arizona Worm Farm

Gardener's Gift Guide: Garden Favorites

This gift may not fit in a stocking, but I can guarantee the gardener in your life will love it. I’ve spent years mixing my soil, and I couldn’t be happier that Arizona Worm Farm now does the mixing for me. I partnered with them to create this mix. The best part is the soil contains their famous compost. They are worth checking out if you live in the Phoenix metropolitan area. They offer pick-up and delivery.

I’m sharing gifts every gardener will love and use. Here are my picks for the perfect presents for the plant lover on your holiday list.

10 Gifts Every Gardener Will Love 2019

Vintage seed packets are a personal favorite of mine. I love these vintage seed catalog cover ornaments. Definitely a great gift at the holidays for any gardener.

Gifts Every Gardener Will Love: Fisher Blacksmithing garden tools

10 Gifts Every Gardener Will Love 2019

These functional tools are also beautiful. Fisher’s tools were described in Forbes Magazine as “look[ing] more like they’ve been unearthed than designed.”

See them on FisherBlacksmithing.com
Designed and hand forged by craftsman Tuli Fisher. “There aren’t any really amazing garden tools for gardeners, but gardening is an art, so why not have luxury tools to work with? They’re just going to make it easier and make it more fun!”, Fisher says.

The best way to water outdoor potted plants #containergardening #watering #containergarden

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you know I love ollas for watering containers. Give your gardener the gift of time with an olla from Growoya.

The vessel is buried underground, and you keep it filled with water, which saves water and time to grow better plants.
See it on Growoya.com

Practical Gifts for Gardeners: Labels for plants

Labeling plants and trees is an important part of gardening. I’ve tried many methods for labeling herbs and vegetables, and this one is my favorite. Unlike other tags, these labels last all season.

At the end of the season, I simply paint over the labels and use them again. I use a white sharpie paint pen to write on the metal plant tags.

I’m not going to lie. This post was fun to write. Not that I don’t enjoy writing about celerypeas, and broccoli . . . but I love sharing my choices for the ten best gifts for gardeners

I own and love most of these, but I would love to have a few (I’m dropping a not-so-subtle hint to my husband here). If you are shopping for a gardener and looking for gardening gift ideas, look no further.

Gifts for Gardeners: Birthmonth flower necklace

Gardening Gift Ideas - Gifts for Gardeners #gardening #gardenergift #holidaygiftguide #giftforgardeners

Each month has a birthstone, but did you realize there is also a flower? Artist Shari Dixon immortalizes the actual flower beautifully in resin in this necklace. It is thoughtful and a bit sentimental, just like us gardeners.

Gifts for Gardeners: A reliable planting guide

Gardener's Gift Guide: Garden Favorites

Planting at the right time is one of the most important parts of gardening. My perpetual planting calendar, created for the low desert of Arizona, shows exactly what to plant each month.

This perpetual calendar also has pictures from my garden of what can be harvested each month. A practical gift that is also well-made and will last for years.

Gardening Gift Idea: A tool belt made just for gardeners

Gardening Gift Ideas - Gifts for Gardeners #gardening #gardenergift #holidaygiftguide #giftforgardeners

Looking for a splurge for your favorite gardener? You can’t go wrong with this handcrafted tool belt from Floret. I’ve had mine for several years, and I love it.

It’s comfortable on your hips and stores my favorite pruners, dibber, cell phone, and a few packs of seeds. It’s not bulky or heavy and saves my jeans’ back pocket from ripping. Bonus: I put my pruners back in my belt instead of on the ground to accidentally throw them away.

Gifts for Gardeners: A thoughtful poem

Even if you don’t choose this gift for your favorite gardener, take a minute to read this beautiful poem by Joanna Miller. This gives you a beautiful glimpse into the hearts of gardeners.

Gardening Gift Idea: The ideal gardening tool

Gardening Gift Ideas - Gifts for Gardeners #gardening #gardenergift #holidaygiftguide #giftforgardeners

This hori-hori garden knife is the kind of tool that once I had it I don’t know how I gardened without it. It is so useful for transplanting, weeding, cutting roots, and digging. I love keeping it nearby when I garden.

Gifts for Gardeners: The perfect t-shirt

Gardening Gift Ideas - Gifts for Gardeners #gardening #gardenergift #holidaygiftguide #giftforgardeners

Love this t-shirt. Simple, visual and to the point.

Gardening Gift Idea: An antique-looking find that won’t break the bank

Gardening Gift Ideas - Gifts for Gardeners #gardening #gardenergift #holidaygiftguide #giftforgardeners

I’m drawn to beautiful antique watering cans. Unfortunately, although beautiful, many antiques aren’t functional and they leak, while those that don’t leak are often expensive. I love this watering can. The antique look that doesn’t leak, at a reasonable price.

Gardening Gift Idea: A practical gardening book

Gardener's Gift Guide: Garden Favorites

I like to keep things simple and easy to understand. That’s exactly what I tried to do when writing this book.

How to Grow Your Own Food – An Illustrated Beginner’s Guide to Container Gardening identifies 50 common, easy-to-grow edible plants, from herbs to vegetables, along with detailed care instructions.

Gifts for Gardeners: The perfect stocking stuffer

Gardening Gift Ideas - Gifts for Gardeners #gardening #gardenergift #holidaygiftguide #giftforgardeners

Until I had this tool, my nails and gloves always wore out a little faster. This wooden dibber helps me plant bulbs and seedlings. I love the printed scale, as it helps me plant each item at the correct depth.
