Plant iris rhizomes in October–November, give them good drainage and at least half a day of sun, and enjoy the benefit of your cooler nights and winter chill. You’ll likely get better bloom performance than people in Phoenix or Mesa.

I want to grow iris. What should I do different from the low desert rules for planting them? Thanks,

Working on a blog post, but you would plant similar to other bulbs. Plant 6″ deep and prechill the bulbs for 6-8 weeks.

For years I have planted bulbs just to have the rabbits each the plants to the ground. I also have a neighbor that feeds and harbors the wild rabbits so it is nearly impossible to ward them off. I can’t surround each plant with chicken wire! Do you have any suggestions? We have a block wall, but they come through and under our gate and feast on ANY green plant they can until they kill it. I should be able to have flowers and plants I love! I have spent Hundreds on deterrents, to no avail.

Never a bad idea to store them in the fridge if you have room. If not a cool, dark place. I store many of mine in a hall closet.
